Hi Piter - thanks for the kind words. My reasons for this blog are basically to question the things that we tend to take for granted. If we are doing something in education simply because that's the way it has always been done, I believe that is not good enough as a reason. And if we adopt new technologies just because they are new, that's not good enough either!

MMM! just catching up on all this edutechnobabble and trying to sort out the wheat from the proverbial. Great work in supporting Linnet with her ning. She's inspired and I'm intrigued by her shining eyes on the topic. Now I just need a podcast or microchip that gets me up to speed on all that I should know [but don't know cos no one at VU has engaged me sufficiently!] about elearning.

I'm not sure what "holographic in nature" means, but your description of "the process of building a learning environment" sounds a lot like the process of "managing a class of adult learners" or, more simply, "learning".

Staving off managers with their pre-determined curriculum objectives and lock-step, universal learning programs is a constant part of my adult literacy work. You say, "Creating learning experiences shouldn’t be about ‘us’ vs ‘them’." I wish it weren't. But it's not me calling them into meetings to impose goals and objectives.

Interesting that you should refer to this as becoming "corporatised". In my world, these "business methodologies" are being applied by long-time civil servants. I think they're simply "boss methodologies".

Agreed. What do the students need to achieve? What are the desired outcomes? What are the traditional approaches? Is there an approach that employs technology that can augment the traditional and perhaps add value? Then add the technology and employ the most appropriate tool for the task.
Know your destination before your elect a mode of transport.
Curmudgeon on!
Cheers, John

Your post brought a smile to my face. My company IS a learning solutions company that routinely designs solutions for an array of corporate clients. It would be very odd NOT to have customers coming to us with the proposed tool already in hand when they request that we build something.

This isn't unique to Web 2.0 technologies, though. It's been going on as long as I've been in the business...which is a long time. Whatever technology is hot, is the technology folks are sure they need to be using.

It is the learning designer's job to help the client marry up the right solution and the right building tools. When I entered the learning industry, video was the hot rage. Suddenly, everything that was done as instructor-led could be done better on video. We simply keep swapping out technologies - but the behavior never really changes.

I look at it this way - part of what I bring to the table in expertise in tools and solutions. Customers trust that we'll help them figure out both.
